Golden Escalator Jammed In Russia
Saudi Arabian leader King Salman returned to his historic journey. This time King Salman headed for Russia, using the same plane when traveling to Indonesia and a number of other countries before.
However, at a visit on Wednesday October 5, 2017 local time, as quoted from Business Insider, Friday (6/11/2017), a gold escalator that brought King Salman down from the plane jammed after a few moments.
The gold escalator was suddenly dysfunctional and made King Salman with some of his companions bewildered. The 81-year-old Saudi leader then descended the staircase step by step toward the runway at Vnukovo International Airport, Russia.
The Saudi king is in Russia to discuss the global oil market and the Syrian crisis with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Luckily for the Saudi leader, the meeting seemed to run better than his escalator, as he and Putin on Thursday 5 October agreed to a sophisticated Russian S-400 missile defense system.
Historic Visits
King Salman of Saudi Arabia made a historic visit to Russia. The number one man in the oil-rich country was listed as the first Saudi king to set foot in the Red Bear Country.
As part of the four-day trip, King Salman is scheduled to meet President Vladimir Putih on Thursday. The talks are both expected to focus on the global oil market and the Syrian conflict.
Relations between the two countries are often tinged with tensions in the past. During the Cold War, the Saudis helped arming Afghan insurgents fighting against the Soviet invasion.
Russia is known to support the regime of Syria led by Bashar al-Assad, and the Saudis and their allies support the opposition.
However, later relations between Russia and Saudi Arabia improved along with the intense meeting between Saudi Crown Prince, Prince Mohammed bin Salman and President Putin.
The meltdown between the two nations helped the agreement in November, in which OPEC and 10 other oil-producing countries, including Russia, agreed to cut production in a bid to tackle supply shortages and shore up crude prices.
Bringing the Entourage
During his historic visit, King Salman brought a large number of Saudi entrepreneurs delegations. Both sides are expected to negotiate new investment deals, including in the energy sector. The Saudis are rumored to have targeted Russian nuclear technology and are thought to be ready to open taps of wider food imports from Russia.
Reported by CNBC, in this visit, leaders of both countries will sign a combined investment agreement worth more than US $ 3 billion, including a deal worth US $ 1.1 billion for the construction of a petrochemical plant in Arabia. This was revealed by Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak to the Financial Times on Wednesday.
While Riyadh continues to guard its strategic alliance with the United States, it is also seen trying to improve relations with Russia to prevent Moscow too close to arch-rivals Iran.
Putin, who had been asked about his country's relations with the Saudis, explained that he did not see Riyadh-Washington's proximity factor as a barrier to closer cooperation with the Saudis. He asserted that the alliance tends to shift.
"Is there something in the world that does not change? I think things change," the Russian president said.
The 'unexpected' approach between Riyadh and Moscow has been reportedly linked in the past year amid worsening Russian relations with the United States and the unpredictable shift in President Donald Trump's policies.
"Our main hope is that the visit will provide a powerful new impetus for the development of bilateral relations because our potential relationships are much more 'rich' than the de facto situation," Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov was quoted as saying by Al Jazeera.
The arrival of King Salman in Moscow was greeted with great fanfare. A number of billboards put up a picture of the king following a welcome message in Arabic and Russian.
