Super Glue for Man's Cursed Wounds, Lungs Can Even Be Glued

Australian researchers have developed a new substance similar to superglue (super glue) that can be sprayed onto the wound - even internal wound - to close it in seconds. These findings have the potential to revolutionize treatment in war zones and at car crash sites. The gel works like a regular bathroom glue commonly used for tile installation, but is made of natural elastic protein. "You just spray it into the wound, gently tack it up and it's all done in just seconds," says Sydney University biochemistry professor Anthony Weiss. The university has partnered with Harvard University and Northeastern University in the US to develop the gel prototype and is now looking forward to moving towards a human test phase. Professor Weiss says the utilization of this super glue has great potential. "This special treatment is revolutionary," he said. "Whether it's in war zones, the location of accidents or when needed, this [new discovery] is a necessity for more substantial and faster surgery, just spraying it." "The shape is a tiny little container, just spray it to the wound, even if it's lung damaged or broken blood vessels or torn." The researchers said the gel could replace traditional staples or stitches and more easily treat internal wounds that are often difficult to reach. They say, the natural elastic nature also makes this super glue ideal for wounds in tissues that are constantly expanding and relaxing, such as heart, lungs and arteries. "The gel seems to remain stable during the period it takes the wound to heal in a complicated mechanical condition," says Professor Ali Khademhosseini of Harvard Medical School. "Then the gel breaks down without any signs of toxicity, it meets all the functions of a highly versatile and efficient surgical adhesive." The research has just been published in the journal Science Translational Medicine and the team is now seeking funding to move on to human testing. "This is a real Australian success story ... we can start tomorrow if the funds are available," said Professor Weiss. This news is from line today
